Johny The Greek's Cornerback Corner: Week 10
What are the best CB options for IDP fantasy football leagues in Week 10?
Welcome back to the Cornerback Corner! As is tradition, we’ll start with some transparency and get right into this week’s calls.
Last week, I made 78 calls for leagues of all shapes and sizes. Of those 78 calls, 13 were declared inactive or were injured during play, which caused them to miss their projection (early in the game). Subtracting those players, we’re left with 65 adjusted calls.
Of those, 47 were correct (matched, beat, or were within a slim margin of their projection on Yahoo and MFL), and 18 were incorrect (didn’t match or beat projection and weren’t even close), giving us 72% accuracy for Week 9.
Of those 47 correct calls, 16 were “massive hits” (doubled, tripled, or more, their projection), giving us a 34% massive hit rate on correct calls for Week 9.
We are 75% accurate overall for the season, with 43% of all correct calls ending up as “massive hits.”
Week 1: 78% accuracy, 34% massive hit rate
Week 2: 71% accuracy, 43% massive hit rate
Week 3: 76% accuracy, 50% massive hit rate
Week 4: 66% accuracy, 53% massive hit rate
Week 5: 89% accuracy, 40% massive hit rate
Week 6: 80% accuracy, 40% massive hit rate
Week 7: 70% accuracy, 52% massive hit rate
Week 8: 81% accuracy, 43% massive hit rate
Week 9: 72% accuracy, 34% massive hit rate
Please see THIS or THIS if you need a primer in cornerback streaming or what’s being discussed in this article (for new readers).
If you've read this more than once, you know the drill by now: When I list the corners each week, it’s always STARTER/BACKUP/BACKUP in “depth chart/what we’ve seen” order if we’re dealing with an injured cornerback.
Also, I missed the Coby Bryant cheat code in Yahoo recently, when I’m looking at CB snaps from NFLGSIS it lists the players as the position they actually played each week so it’s very possible I’ll miss these occasionally. If you notice a player that’s playing safety and is designated a corner in your league of merit please feel free to comment below. I’ll update the article with that information so we all can share in the bounty from the designation mistakes from these league sites. Thank you!
Bengals at Ravens
Outlook: The Thursday night game to kick off Week 10 has an excellent 50 points for the early over/under with Baltimore favored by a touchdown. Cincy is a top-ten passing offense, the same with Baltimore. Cincy is within the top third of the league for targeting their wide receivers and should improve on that whenever Tee Higgins decides to play football again. Baltimore is within the worst third of the league for this ranking but just acquired Diontae Johnson to help with this factor.
In general, this is a better Baltimore corners setup than for Cincy, but we can start the usual suspects here and feel pretty good about it. With four teams on bye this week we may need to “settle” a bit more than we normally would.
Cincinnati Bengals
Cam Taylor Britt (CB): SOLID, he played 87% of snaps last week and then sat due to the blowout.
Mike Hilton (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues, he played 59% of snaps last week and then sat due to the blowout.
DJ Turner (CB): SOLID, he played 98% of snaps last week.
Baltimore Ravens
Marlon Humphrey (CB): SOLID, it would be IDEAL but he only played 53% of snaps last week and is coming off of a significant injury. With that in mind, he may not get back up to 100% of snaps this week. It’s not a bad Hail Mary if you need it, but I can’t call it IDEAL until we know he’s completely healthy and back up to full snaps.
Brandon Stephens (CB/S): SOLID, he played 94% of snaps last week.
Nate Wiggins (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues, he played 44% of snaps last week and then sat due to the blowout.
Giants at Panthers
Outlook: The early over/under for this one sits at 42 points with New York favored by five points. Neither passing attack is good, both are within the worst third of the league overall. New York targets their wide receivers a ton, first overall across the league for this ranking, while Carolina is within the middle of the pack. We can fire up our Carolina corners in a pretty solid setup but our New York corners should only be used in deeper leagues this week and with this setup.
New York Giants
Deonte Banks (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only due to the matchup, he was back up to 100% of snaps last week after being benched mid-game the week prior. It’s still iffy and the matchup isn’t good at all, I’d only consider this as a deep league play this week.
Cor’Dale Flott (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only due to the matchup, he played 85% of snaps last week.
Andru Phillips (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 77% of snaps last week.
Carolina Panthers
Jaycee Horn (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Mike Jackson (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Chau Smith-Wade/Dane Jackson (CB): SIT, Smith-Wade only saw 16% of snaps last week while Dane Jackson was in for just 28% of snaps. There is no legitimate third cornerback option in Carolina at the moment but we’ll continue to monitor it.
Patriots at Bears
Outlook: We’ve got a lower total here, just 40.5 points with Chicago favored by a touchdown. The New England passing attack is dead on arrival, they’re the worst overall across the entire league and only target their wide receivers among the worst third of the league. It will be deeper leagues only for Jaylon Johnson and our Chicago corners this week.
As for the reverse, Chicago is also among the worst third of the league for passing offense despite being loaded with talent at wide receiver. They’re also within the worst third of the league for targeting those wide receivers so it will be “deeper leagues only” across the board for this matchup.
New England Patriots
Christian Gonzalez (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Marcus Jones (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 62% of snaps last week.
Jonathan Jones (CB): SOLID, he was back up to 71% of snaps last week and it looks like the Marco Wilson experimentation may be over with.
Marco Wilson (CB): SIT, he only played 32% of snaps last week and didn’t jam up the playing time for either “Jones” all that much. We appear to be done with him for now but we’ll see what the next game brings.
Chicago Bears
Tyrique Stevenson (CB): SOLID, despite being benched to start the game as a punishment for his actions during the Hail Mary the week prior he still ended up playing 79% of snaps last week. He should be back up to full snaps this week.
Kyler Gordon/Josh Blackwell/All others (CB): With Kyler out last week we saw a mish-mash of different backup corners including Blackwell, Steward, and Smith. None of them played enough for our interest. If it’s not Gordon then we SIT everyone else. Gordon would be SOLID, deeper leagues only, if healthy this week.
Jaylon Johnson (CB): SOLID, he played 95% of snaps last week.
Bills at Colts
Outlook: We’ve got a beautiful 47.5 points with Buffalo favored by four points for the early total and spread here, that looks pretty good. Buffalo is among the middle of the pack for their passing offense and targets their wide receivers the same but have made some moves to improve these factors (Amari Cooper trade). We can fire up Kenny Moore and company in medium to deeper leagues and be in a good spot I think.
For the reverse, Joe Flacco only completed 16 passes on 27 attempts last week but it was against that excellent Minnesota defense that was top-five in sacking the quarterback heading into Week 9. That tracks. He should be a bit better this week and it’s not Anthony Richardson so we’ll have some completed passes for sure. I’d roll out our Buffalo corners in medium to deeper leagues this week.
Buffalo Bills
Taron Johnson (CB): IDEAL, he played 95% of snaps last week and is an even bet to be the tackles leader for Buffalo on any given Sunday.
Rasul Douglas (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Christian Benford/Kaiir Elam (CB): With Benford inactive last week it was Elam as the replacement playing 95% of snaps. We’ve seen this before. If Benford is inactive again then Elam would be SOLID, if Benford is healthy this week then he would be SOLID. Either one would play full snaps or close to it. If Benford is active then Elam will have no value (remember, STARTER/BACKUP/BACKUP for order in these calls).
Indianapolis Colts
Kenny Moore (CB): IDEAL, he played 100% of snaps last week and just had his second massive game in a row and his third week of clearing his projection in a row. In a vacuum, if you never told me the matchup or anything else, I’d still always take Kenny Moore as an IDEAL option every single time, he’s that good and has been for years.
Jaylon Jones (CB): IDEAL, he played 100% of snaps last week and has beaten out his projection handily every single game this season without exception.
Samuel Womack (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 60% of snaps last week.
Vikings at Jaguars
Outlook: We’ve got an excellent 47.5 points for the early total here with Minnesota favored by four points. Both passing attacks are among the middle of the pack. Jacksonville is among the top third of the league for targeting their wide receivers while Minnesota is among the middle of the pack. We can fire up the usual suspects in this one in “medium to deeper” leagues and that should be about right.
Minnesota Vikings
Byron Murphy (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Stephon Gilmore (CB): SOLID, he played 93% of snaps last week.
Shaq Griffin (CB): SIT, he only played 37% of snaps last week and has only seen “acceptable” playing time in blowouts this season.
Josh Metellus (CB/S): SOLID, he played 81% of snaps last week and is a safety incorrectly designated as a cornerback (cheat code). He’s typically IDEAL but the matchup isn’t great against this mediocre at best Jacksonville offense.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Tyson Campbell (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Ronald Darby (CB): SOLID, back from injury he played 77% of snaps last week and reclaimed his CB2 role here in Jacksonville.
Jarrian Jones/Montaric Brown (CB): Jones was only in for 67% of snaps while Brown was in for 23% of snaps last week. The fluctuation continues for this secondary, but it’s moved on to the CB3 role here in Jacksonville. SIT them both, for now, we’ll readjust after the dust settles.
Darnell Savage (CB/S): SOLID, he played 99% of snaps as a starting safety despite being designated a corner across several league sites (cheat code).
Broncos at Chiefs
Outlook: We’ve got a lower 42 points for the over/under here with the Chiefs favored by 10 points. Kansas City is within the top third of the league for overall passing offense while Denver is within the bottom third of the league. Denver is within the top third of the league for targeting their wide receivers while Kansas City is dead last in this category. The Chiefs have made a move to address this, adding DeAndre Hopkins, and that move paid off with a massive debut for him last week.
I don’t know if this plus an “active Juju Smith-Schuster” fixes the wide receiver target problem for Kansas City, but it’s certainly a good start after what Hopkins did last week. With this in mind, I’m more comfortable with the Denver cornerback options, “medium to deeper leagues” for them this week and “deeper leagues only” for our Kansas City corners.
Denver Broncos
Riley Moss (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Patrick Surtain (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
JaQuan McMillian (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 46% of snaps last week and likely got some rest due to the blowout.
Kansas City Chiefs
Trent McDuffie (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Chammari Conner (CB/S): SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 75% of snaps last week and his playing time has fluctuated wildly all season long.
Nazeeh Johnson/Joshua Williams (CB): The official depth chart says this is Nazeeh Johnson’s role, but he was inactive last week so we got 100% of snaps from Joshua Williams instead. We did see Nazeeh the game prior have a decent role so this specific cornerback slot is still up in the air in my eyes. With an “iffy” matchup to begin with we can just sit them both this week and see how it plays out. SIT them both.
Falcons at Saints
Outlook: We’ve got a beautiful 47 points for the early over/under here with just a one-point spread, that’s perfect. Atlanta is a top-ten passing attack while New Orleans is among the middle of the pack. Atlanta is also within the top ten for targeting their wide receivers while New Orleans is once again among the middle of the pack. Our New Orleans corners are in a great spot this week but it will be “deeper leagues only” for our Atlanta corners against this run-heavy Saints team. The total and spread looked good but unless all the factors line up for us the matchup won’t be perfect.
Atlanta Falcons
AJ Terrell (CB): SOLID, he played 95% of snaps last week.
Mike Hughes (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Dee Alford (CB): SOLID, he played 91% of snaps last week.
New Orleans Saints
Alontae Taylor (CB): IDEAL, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Koolaid McKinstry/Shemar Jean-Charles (CB): With both McKinstry and Lattimore out it was Shemar Jean-Charles as the only backup corner I saw in the snap counts. He played 98% of snaps but is also way down the depth chart overall, it looks like other corners would have gotten a shot before him but were also hurt. So we’ll make it easy, if Koolaid is out again then we SIT everyone. If he’s healthy then McKinstry would be SOLID and should play every snap or close to it.
Marshon Lattimore (CB): SIT, he was just traded to Washington and the odds of him being immediately involved enough for us to be interested this week are slim and none.
49ers at Buccaneers
Outlook: We’ve got a massive 48 points for the early total here with San Francisco favored by a touchdown. Both passing attacks are within the top ten overall for yards per game. San Francisco is within the top third of the league for targeting their wide receivers, and Tampa Bay is top ten for this ranking but slipping each week that Mike Evans is out. Chris Godwin being gone for the season doesn’t help either, the rankings haven’t caught up to this yet but we’ve seen it with our own eyes already. It’s the Tampa Bay running backs and tight ends who are getting the targets, not the backup wide receivers.
It will be “deeper leagues only” for our 49ers corners, and “leagues of all sizes” for Zyon McCollum and our Tampa Bay corners in Week 10.
San Francisco 49ers
Chavarious Ward (CB): SOLID, he played 94% of snaps the last time we saw him.
Deommodore Lenoir (CB): SOLID, he played 98% of snaps the last time we saw him.
Renardo Green (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues, he played 73% of snaps the last time we saw him, which is just as much as Isaac Yiadom played weekly before him (who he replaced/displaced).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Zyon McCollum (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Tyrek Funderburk (CB): SIT, while he did look like the Jamel Dean replacement as recently as the game before this one, he only played 6% of snaps last week. It appears that Hayes has displaced him as the Jamel Dean replacement for the moment.
Josh Hayes (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, massively risky, I wouldn’t do it. But if you need a Hail Mary this could be it. Hayes played 93% of snaps last week and had a very nice box score, with Funderburk at 53.7 for a PFF grade and Hayes at 63.7 it’s a good bet that Hayes will continue to start until Dean returns from IR. It’s not set in stone though, as Funderburk losing all his snaps over the last week or so should show everyone very clearly.
Jamel Dean (CB): SIT, on IT until at least Week 12.
Steelers at Commanders
Outlook: We’ve got a nice 44.5 points for the early total here with Washington favored by only 1.5 points, essentially a pick-em. Washington is a top-ten passing attack while Pittsburgh is within the worst third of the league but has been improving with Wilson under center. Washington targets their wide receivers among the middle of the pack while Pittsburgh is the third-worst team across the entire league for this ranking.
It will be “deeper leagues only” for our Washington corners and “leagues of all sizes” for Joey Porter Jr and our Pittsburgh options.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Joey Porter Jr (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps the last time we saw him.
Donte Jackson (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps the last time we saw him.
Beanie Bishop Jr (CB): SOLID, he played 83% of snaps the last time we saw him and he has three interceptions in his last two games, he’s heating up!
Tre’Davious White (CB): SIT, he was just traded to Pittsburgh but is likely a depth piece only. He probably wouldn’t play much this week anyway even if that wasn’t the case.
Washington Commanders
Benjamin St Juste (CB): SOLID, he played 98% of snaps last week.
Mike Sainristil (CB): SOLID, he played 95% of snaps last week.
Quan Martin (CB/S): SOLID, he played 95% of snaps last week.
Noah Igbinoghene (CB): SOLID, he played 83% of snaps last week and has out-snapped Forbes the last couple of weeks in a row, it looks like he’s won the battle to be the CB3 here in Washington for the moment at least.
Emmanuel Forbes (CB): SIT, he didn’t play at all last week.
Marshon Lattimore (CB): SIT, he probably won’t play much this week at all.
Titans at Chargers
Outlook: We’ve got a likely defensive struggle with the early total only sitting at 38 points with Los Angeles favored by a touchdown. Tennessee is the second-worst passing attack in the league and Los Angeles is within the worst third of the league but improving over the last two games. Both teams are within the worst third of the league for targeting their wide receivers. It will be “deeper leagues only” across the board for this one despite the improvement of the Charger’s passing attack, it’s getting there but they’re still a “run first” team in my eyes, and while there has been some nice passing offense recently most of it has come in chunk yardage (we like dink and dunk around these parts).
Tennessee Titans
L’Jarius Sneed/Jarvis Brownlee (CB): Sneed was inactive again last week, if he’s healthy this week he would be SOLID, deeper leagues only due to reinjury risk. If Sneed is out again we’ll be getting Brownlee, who played 100% of snaps last week and would be SOLID, deeper leagues only due to the matchup.
Roger McCreary (CB): SOLID, he played 88% of snaps last week.
Chidobe Awuzie/Darrell Baker Jr (CB): Awuzie is still on IR at the time of writing but we’re getting close to his return date, if he’s back this week I would SIT him after an IR stint (reinjury risk, likely “eased” back into the lineup). If Awuzie is inactive again then Baker Jr becomes an option in deeper leagues (SOLID).
Los Angeles Chargers
Tarheeb Still (CB): It certainly looks like Still has beaten out Taylor for a starting CB slot here, however, there’s still enough uncertainty and fluctuation that I’d recommend that you SIT him. He should play at least the 92% of snaps we saw last week but with this (bad) matchup we don’t need to risk it at all.
Asante Samuel Jr/Cam Hart (CB): Samuel should be getting close to coming off of the short-term IR, if he can this week I would SIT him in his first game back, same reasoning as Still above. If he’s inactive again then Hart would be SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 89% of snaps last week.
Elijah Molden (CB/S): Molden appears to have solidified a real role here despite the fluctuation and shenanigans, he played 90% of snaps last week and had a monster game. SOLID, deeper leagues only due to the matchup.
Ja’Sir Taylor/All others (CB): SIT everyone else, there’s been a ton of movement in this Los Angeles cornerback corps recently but it’s settled down somewhat recently. Taylor and any “other” corners we’ve mentioned that you don’t see above can be benched this week.
Jets at Cardinals
Outlook: 45 points is the early total here, which is perfectly acceptable, with the Cardinals favored by one (pick-em). New York is among the middle of the pack for their passing offense while Arizona is within the worst third of the league overall. New York is within the top ten for targeting their wide receivers while Arizona is within the worst third of the league for this ranking. It will be “deeper leagues only” for our New York options and “leagues of all sizes” for our Cardinals corners in Week 10.
New York Jets
Sauce Gardner (CB): SOLID, he played 96% of snaps last week.
DJ Reed (CB): SOLID, he played 81% of snaps last week and missed a few plays with an injury scare but was able to return to the game and finished with a monster performance overall.
Michael Carter/Brandin Echols/Kendall Sheffield (CB): Carter was injured after only 35% of snaps last week and it was a hodge-podge of random corners replacing him. If Carter is inactive this week then I’d just SIT all the backup options.
Jalen Mills/Isaiah Oliver (CB/S): Just a reminder, if Tony Adams or Ashtyn Davis is inactive this week we’ve seen corners playing safety (Yahoo and elsewhere) with Jalen Mills for Adams and Isaiah Oliver for Davis. Use this information however you see fit. Mills has been a legit cheat code putting up safety numbers while designated a corner the last couple of weeks with this scenario, Oliver has been less productive but still solid.
Arizona Cardinals
Sean Murphy Bunting/Max Melton (CB): With Bunting inactive last week, it was Melton as the replacement once more. He played 97% of snaps and would be SOLID if Bunting is out again. Bunting would be solid, deeper leagues only due to reinjury risk and missing the last couple of weeks with a neck injury.
Starling Thomas (CB): SOLID, he played 92% of snaps last week.
Garrett Williams (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, he played 84% of snaps last week and plays the least of the Arizona corners on a week-to-week basis.
Eagles at Cowboys
Outlook: We’ve got an excellent 48 points for the early total here with Philly favored by a field goal, I can pretty much guarantee it will be far worse than that for Dallas. Dallas is a top-ten passing offense but slowly losing ground as they put up stinker after stinker these days, Philly is among the middle of the pack for passing offense. Dallas is within the top ten for targeting their wide receivers while Philly is the second-worst team in the league for this ranking.
It will be “deeper leagues only” for our Philly corners against a backup quarterback and a shredded Dallas offense. “Medium to deeper” leagues for our Dallas corners, especially if AJ Brown can play this week.
Philadelphia Eagles
Darius Slay/Isaiah Rogers (CB): With Slay inactive last week it was Rogers as the replacement once more. He played 100% of snaps and would be SOLID if Slay is inactive again this week. Slay would also be SOLID if he could go this week.
Quinyon Mitchell (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Cooper DeJean (CB): SOLID, he played 96% of snaps last week.
Dallas Cowboys
Trevon Diggs (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Jourdan Lewis (CB): SOLID, he played 96% of snaps last week.
Caelan Carson/DaRon Bland (CB): SOLID, he played 95% of snaps last week but will immediately be displaced when Bland returns from IR, which could be any day now. Bland would be SOLID, deeper leagues only, if he can play this week (reinjury risk, likely being eased back into the lineup, etc).
Lions at Texans
Outlook: We’ve got an excellent 48.5 points for the early total here with Detroit favored by a field goal. Both passing attacks are within the top third of the league. Houston is a top-ten team for targeting their wide receivers but I imagine that ranking hasn’t caught up to the injuries yet, it will be “medium to deeper leagues” for our Detroit corners this week. Detroit targets their wide receivers among the worst third of the league because they don’t need to all that often with their excellent run game. It will be the same, medium to deeper leagues, for our Houston corners with this in mind.
Detroit Lions
Brian Branch (CB/S): IDEAL, he was ejected early last week but should play every snap this week, as is tradition, and is a safety incorrectly designated as a corner in some places.
Carlton Davis (CB): IDEAL, he played 95% of snaps last week.
Terrion Arnold (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Amik Robertson (CB): SIT, he played 43% of snaps last week.
Houston Texans
Derek Stingley (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Kamari Lassiter (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Dolphins at Rams
Outlook: We’ve got a massive 49.5 points for the early total here with Los Angeles favored by a field goal. Los Angeles is within the top third of the league for targeting their wide receivers and those wide receivers are getting healthy now as well, we can fire up Jalen Ramsey and company with confidence in an ideal setup. For the reverse, Tua looked much better last week and his pass-catching weapons are healthy as well. It will be “leagues of all sizes” for Darious Williams and the Los Angeles corners for Monday Night Football as well this week.
Miami Dolphins
Jalen Ramsey (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week.
Kendall Fuller (CB): SOLID, he played 98% of snaps last week.
Kader Kohou (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, if healthy. He was inactive last week and there was a hodge-podge of replacement corners in his place, none of them played enough for us to be interested.
Los Angeles Rams
Cobie Durant (CB): SOLID, he played 99% of snaps last week.
Darious Williams (CB): SOLID, he played 98% of snaps last week.
Akhello Witherspoon (CB): SIT, he showed up again last week and played 84% of snaps but has only recorded stats in five of eight games this season and has only had acceptable playing time in three of them. He’s normally a member of the practice squad and we have no idea when he’ll be called up for game action as the Los Angeles Rams don’t feel the need to tell me that information before game time.
Byes this week: Packers, Browns, Raiders, Seahawks
