IDP Dynasty Targets for 2023
Playing for next year? Here are some players to target in trades.
It's Week 5 and I know what you’re thinking: man, my team sucks. Keenan Allen has been hurt all year, Chase Young hasn’t come back from his injury, and Jeremy Chinn just went to the injured reserve. If that’s the case, fear not! Not only is there still a lot of football to be played and players to be picked up for 2022, but 2023 is right around the corner and there are some nice IDPs to be had on the cheap.
Let's take a look at several IDPs that we can grab now and be thankful for later.
Malcolm Rodriguez, LB, Detroit Lions
With Alex Anzalone continuing to lead the Lions LBs in snaps on a defense that is struggling, the question has to be asked: how much longer will the Lions lean on Anzalone? “Porn Parody Thor” (h/t Macri) has been seeing the snaps, but his PFF grades have been atrocious. With a 46.9 overall grade and a 44.9 grade in coverage, how much longer is Dan Campbell going to put up with this substandard LB play? For the worst-ranked team defense in 2022, probably not much longer.
Enter Malcolm Rodriquez. Now I will admit, the IDP community is coming around on Rodriguez, so he’s becoming a known commodity. What might have cost you a 4th several weeks ago, will probably cost you a 3rd now. But would you let a 2023 3rd stop you from getting what could be the Lions LB heading into the future? The Lions, as much as we all like to root for them and hope they turn it around, are still the Lions. For the foreseeable future, their defense will be on the field a lot.
With an overall PFF grade of 70.5 and a coverage grade of 65.0, Rodriquez is making his presence felt and making the days of Anzalone numbered. Even with the preseason hype, Hard Knocks love, and solid start to the season, I believe Rodriquez can still be had on the cheap. And not only do I think we see meaningful snaps from Rodriguez in 2022, but based on his talent, I think he has staying power in 2023.
According to Big 3 Scoring, Rodriguez currently ranks as the LB28 while still not seeing a full complement of stats in 2022. “Pay up” now for “Rodrigo.”
You’ll reap the benefits later this season AND in 2023.
Travon Walker, EDGE, Jacksonville Jaguars
IDP managers might be getting a bit frustrated with the first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Walker had a hot start to start the season, scoring 26.2 points by Big 3 Scoring, but since then, he hasn’t put up a sack and his point totals combined only add up to 18.25 points. But the underlying metrics have been extremely positive:
He’s played 85.56% of the team’s total snaps through Week 4
Of those snaps, 53.6% of the time Walker is rushing the passer
His overall PFF grade of 63.3 is solid for a rookie
So, Walker is getting opportunity and doing fairly well with it through the first 4 games of his career. While it’s true the pass rush grade of 47.6 isn’t the best, we knew it would take time for Walker to mature as a pass rusher at the NFL level.
In other words, the best is yet to come with Walker. If you have a frustrated manager in your league, throw out a 2023 3rd and see if they bite. Or, if you roster Josh Allen, see if you can get Walker and a 2nd round pick back in exchange.
Jaquan Brisker, Safety, Chicago Bears
I understand we don’t value DBs very highly at The IDP Show. We tend to recommend that you all fade DBs to the end of your drafts and trade them when you can. But the play from Jaquan Brisker might cause us to change that mindset.
Just like a good toasty BBQ brisket sandwich is going to leave you wanting more, the play from this young, talented DB is doing the same. Brisker has produced already for IDP managers, but with only 25 tackles through 4 weeks, there is still some meat left on the bone. With a sack in Week 4 against the New York Giants, this gives Brisker a sack on only 11 pass rush snaps in 2022. So, the potential for the big play is there.
With Chicago looking much like the previously mentioned Detroit Lions, there is minimal talent on either roster worth writing about. But like Malcolm Rodriguez, we’ve seen a spark with Brisker and his time in the sun is coming.
