IDP Waiver Wire: Week 2
Looking for some IDPs to target off waivers after Week 1? Here are a couple guys at DL, DB, and LB who might be worth adding to your roster.
One of the most important aspects of building and maintaining a championship IDP team is working the waiver wire. This is something you should not only do when you have a player get injured or on bye—but also as a way to keep those players off your opponent’s rosters. In other words, playing a little defense with the defense!
Hopefully, these names are some players available in your league who can help you win a championship! Disclaimer: these players will be names of guys who are not typically drafted in standard IDP startups.
Defensive Line
Rasheem Green, Seattle Seahawks
This fourth-year pro busted out on Sunday with 3 solos, 1 assist, 1 sack, and 2 (count them, 2!) passes defended while playing 70% of the snaps. I love to see a diverse stat line from a player and especially at the DL spot.
Guys who play DL and are sack dependent can leave you with some goose eggs in your lineups—something you DO NOT want. Look for Green to continue his impressive start against a shaky Tennessee O-line that had a long day against Arizona.
Javon Hargrave, Philadelphia Eagles
Michael Pierce, Minnesota Vikings
These next two guys were almost clones in snap count and production. I couldn’t pick just one, so you get a bonus DL addition this week! Hargrave and Pierce both played over 55% of snaps and had 3 solos, 3 assists, (4 for Pierce), and 2 sacks!
Defensive Back
Jayron Kearse, Dallas Cowboys
I know I am probably in the minority here, but watching that game on Thursday night, I really thought Kearse was the most active of the safeties. Although he only played 62% of snaps (far less than Donovan Wilson, who played 85%, and Damontae Kazee, who played 80%), Kearse outscored both of them combined!
I am expecting him to get a few more snaps as the season continues. Kearse scored 16 points in most leagues on limited snaps and didn’t rely on big plays to do it. He racked up 6 solos and 5 assists, meaning he spent his 40 defensive snaps around the ball!
Eric Rowe, Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are leading the AFC East and Rowe put up a huge day against his former club (the Patriots). He had 6 tackles, 3 assists, and a forced fumble. With not a lot in front of him at linebacker, I’m thinking Rowe will continue to eat.
The team playing well and being ahead sometimes this season will also help Rowe with some bigger splash plays, as well. With a matchup against division foe Buffalo up next, look for Rowe to row your boat and team to victory in Week 2.
Linebacker
Justin Hollins, Los Angeles Rams
Run—do not walk—to your waivers and see if Cole Holcomb or Kenny Young are available for some reason. Go ahead, look. I’ll wait… oh, they’re added? Let’s pivot then. If Young is already rostered, take a look and see if Justin Hollins is available.
There’s a good chance this 23-point superstar will be available after posting 6 solos, 2 assists, 2 sacks, and a big forced fumble. While Hollins isn’t playing every snap, he did play 79% of snaps in Week 1, a number which should only continue to creep further and further north as the season and the sack total progress.
The Rams play the Colts next week and Hollins should see a lot of Jonathan Taylor and Carson Wentz—much to the chagrin of some podcasters from Kentucky!
Del’Shawn Phillips, New York Jets
Another LB who might be an add this week—not to play in Week 2, but maybe just to stash and see what develops because of the multitude of injuries is—Phillips. Not even Phillips’ mom thought her son would be relevant this year, but with injuries to Jarrad Davis and now Jamien Sherwood, it was Phillips (and not converted DB Hamsah Nasirildeen) who took over when Sherwood exited.
Phillips went on to play 89% of snaps, and although the solo tackle numbers were not eye-popping (with just 3), it was his 9 assists that should have you excited as he was active and always around the ball. Is Phillips supremely talented or just the next man up? Probably the latter, but until we know the extent of Sherwood’s injury, Phillips is a guy I’m happy to add this week to see what the second-year pro can do.
Hope some of these names help you in Week 2 and beyond. Good luck with your claims this week, and before I leave you, please go and sell Christian Kirksey before he gets hurt and you’re stuck holding him for another injury-riddled season!
Later kids!
