Johny The Greek's Cornerback Corner: Week 14
What are the best CB options for IDP fantasy football leagues in Week 14?
Welcome back to the Cornerback Corner! As is tradition, we’ll start with transparency and get right into this week’s calls.
Last week, I made 81 calls for leagues of all shapes and sizes. Of those 81 calls, 2 were declared inactive or were injured during play, which caused them to miss their projection (early in the game). Subtracting those players, we’re left with 79 “adjusted” calls.
Of those, 59 were correct (matched, beat, or were within a slim margin of their projection on Yahoo and MFL), and 20 were incorrect (didn’t match or beat projection and weren’t even close), giving us 74% accuracy for Week 13.
Of those 59 correct calls, 21 were “massive hits” (doubled, tripled, or more, their projection), giving us a 35% massive hit rate on correct calls for Week 13.
We are 72% accurate overall for the season, with 38% of all correct calls ending up as “massive hits.”
Week 1: 72% accuracy, 41% massive hit rate
Week 2: 73% accuracy, 46% massive hit rate
Week 3: 65% accuracy, 45% massive hit rate
Week 4: 73% accuracy, 36% massive hit rate
Week 5: 75% accuracy, 32% massive hit rate
Week 6: 67% accuracy, 34% massive hit rate
Week 7: 75% accuracy, 38% massive hit rate
Week 8: 75% accuracy, 30% massive hit rate
Week 9: 76% accuracy, 32% massive hit rate
Week 10: 72% accuracy, 36% massive hit rate
Week 11: 75% accuracy, 43% massive hit rate
Week 12: 66% accuracy, 43% massive hit rate
Week 13: 74% accuracy, 35% massive hit rate
Please see THIS if you need a primer in cornerback streaming or what’s being discussed in this article (for new readers).
If you notice a player playing safety who is designated a corner in your league of merit, please feel free to comment below, and I’ll update the article with that information.
Alignment & utilization metrics are sourced from PFF.com, an outstanding resource for all things fantasy football-related.
To this point in the season, these teams use 11 personnel (3 WR sets) the least week-to-week (go from the bottom up on this list). Your opposing slot corners (Taron, Phillips, Alford, etc) will likely see a significant reduction in playing time against these teams. Thank you to sumersports.com for the information.
Cowboys at Lions
Outlook: The early total for this likely shootout in the Motor City sits at an incredible 54.5 points with Detroit favored by a touchdown at home and indoors. Dallas is the number one team in the league for passing yards per game, while Detroit is in the top ten for this ranking. Dallas has the 4th most wide receiver targets in the league, while Detroit is in the middle of the pack for this ranking.
We fire up everyone who’s breathing and plays cornerback for this one. This is a fantastic matchup that should offer tons of offense and plenty of action for our corners in Week 14.
Dallas Cowboys
Trevon Diggs (CB): SOLID in deeper leagues, if healthy. He is designated to return from IR sometime in the next few weeks and would have a role as a full-time outside cornerback when that occurs.
DaRon Bland (CB): SOLID. He played 86% of snaps last week, most of them from outside corner, but he also had a nice chunk of slot snaps. He’s been playing more outside corner in recent weeks, and this change in utilization has hurt his production a bit it appears.
All others (CB): SIT. Shavon Revel played 95% of snaps as an outside corner for Dallas last week, but we’ve only seen that once, and this entire cornerback corps has been in flux beyond Bland for weeks now.
Detroit Lions
Amik Robertson (CB): SOLID. He played 95% of snaps last week despite both Reed and Arnold being active. It appears that Robertson will retain some kind of role here even with those two normal starters healthy. Robertson had a nice chunk of slot and box snaps last week but played mostly from outside corner. Update, with Terrion now heading to IR, Robertson will have a safe role going forward for sure.
DJ Reed (CB): SOLID. He was up to 87% of snaps as an outside corner last week and is on track to fully regain his starting slot and playing time.
Terrion Arnold (CB): SIT. He is heading back to IR once more. Amik Robertson and DJ Reed will be our primary two options going forward.
Seahawks at Falcons
Outlook: The early total for this battle in Atlanta sits at 43.5 points with Seattle favored by a touchdown on the road. Seattle is a top-five passing offense (YPG), while Atlanta is within the middle of the pack. Both teams are in the middle of the pack for wide receiver targets each week. We can fire up our normal cornerback options in medium to deeper leagues here. Demote our Seattle corners a bit if London is inactive again this week.
Seattle Seahawks
Devon Witherspoon (CB): SOLID. He played 96% of snaps last week, most of them from the outside corner slot, but with a nice chunk of box/slot snaps as well.
Nick Emmanwori (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 96% of snaps last week, most of them from the slot or box.
Josh Jobe (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 61% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Tariq Woolen (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 75% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Coby Bryant (S/CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as a deep safety last week. Bryant is incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo.
Atlanta Falcons
Mike Hughes (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
AJ Terrell (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Dee Alford (CB): SOLID. He played 63% of snaps as the slot corner last week. See the link at the top of the article to get a read on if he’ll lose snaps or not this week based on the opponent and their 11 personnel usage rate.
Steelers at Ravens
Outlook: The early total for this AFC North showdown is 47.5 points, with Baltimore favored by a touchdown at home. Both teams are in the bottom third of the league for passing yards per game. These two teams are “dead last” and “second worst” in the league for wide receiver targets each week, respectively. It will be “deeper leagues only” for our corners in this one, as neither team targets their wide receivers enough for our purposes.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Jalen Ramsey (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week as a starting safety that has been incorrectly designated a corner in Yahoo. He had a good chunk of box snaps and some slot snaps as well.
Joey Porter Jr (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
James Pierre/Asante Samuel Jr (CB): SIT them both. Pierre was concussed last week and likely won’t play. Samuel is a backup for a backup for a backup. With this matchup, we don’t need to be chasing those shenanigans.
Brandin Echols (CB): SOLID. Much deeper leagues only due to the matchup. He played 45% of snaps from the slot last week.
Darius Slay (CB): SIT. He was a healthy inactive last week and has been displaced by Pierre.
Baltimore Ravens
Marlon Humphrey (CB): SOLID. This would be ideal if the matchup were better. The Glizzy Gobbler has now smashed his projection in four weeks in a row since announcing to the world that he plans to gobble 50 glizzies in 50 states. He played 100% of snaps last week, mostly from outside, but also with a nice chunk of slot/box snaps.
Nate Wiggins/Chidobe Awuzie (CB): Wiggins exited with a foot injury last week, and Awuzie saw a bump in playing time after his departure, as expected. Wiggins would be SOLID as a full-time outside corner if he can play this week. Awuzie would see a bump in snaps to cover his absence if he’s inactive. Awuzie would be SOLID if Wiggins is out, SIT otherwise.
Titans at Browns
Outlook: The early total for this dumpster fire defensive struggle sits at just 34.5 points with Cleveland favored by a field goal at home. We have the third-worst and second-worst passing offenses (YPG) here, respectively. Cleveland is in the bottom third of the league for wide receiver targets, while Tennessee is in the middle of the pack. It will be “deeper leagues only” across the board for this one.
Tennessee Titans
Darrell Baker Jr (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Marcus Harris (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
All others (CB): SIT. No other corner cleared 8% of snaps played for Tennessee last week.
Cleveland Browns
Tyson Campbell (CB): SOLID. He played 94% of snaps as an outside corner last week. This would be IDEAL if the matchup were better. Campbell has only been under projection in two games this entire season despite the not ideal utilization.
Denzel Ward (CB): SOLID. He played 92% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Myles Harden (CB): SOLID, much deeper leagues only. He played 50% of snaps last week as the slot corner.
Colts at Jaguars
Outlook: The early total for this AFC South matchup sits at 48.5 points with Indianapolis favored by a field goal on the road. Indy is a top-ten team for passing yards per game, while Jacksonville is in the middle of the pack. Jacksonville is a top-ten team for wide receiver targets, while Indy is in the middle of the pack.
We’ve got an ideal setup for our Indy corners in this setup, but it will be “medium to deeper leagues” for our Jacksonville corners against an Indy team that can win just as easily by leaning on Taylor & Warren as opposed to their wide receivers.
Indianapolis Colts
Sauce Gardner/Mekhi Blackmon/Jaylon Jones (CB): SIT them all. Sauce was injured last week and is likely to miss a game or two. Blackmon and Jones combined to cover his absence, so there was no clear “backup corner” for us to grab off waivers here. I would lean Blackmon if you need a warm body.
Kenny Moore (CB): IDEAL. He played 73% of snaps from the slot last week and has a fantastic matchup to work from and to take advantage of his ideal utilization in Week 14.
Chavarious Ward (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jourdan Lewis (CB): IDEAL. He played 71% of snaps from the slot and box last week and then sat due to the blowout. His utilization remains excellent, and we saw what he was capable of production-wise earlier this season in this setup.
Greg Newsome (CB): SOLID. He played 71% of snaps as an outside corner last week and then sat due to the blowout.
Montaric Brown (CB): SOLID. He played 69% of snaps, nice, as an outside corner last week, then sat due to the blowout.
Jarrian Jones (CB): SIT. He was down to just 52% of snaps last week as Lewis returned from injury and started ramping up his own snap count. I expect this trend to continue in Week 14.
Commanders at Vikings
Outlook: The early total for this one sits at 43.5 points with Minnesota favored by a field goal at home. Both teams are within the bottom third of the league for passing yards per game. Minnesota is in the middle of the pack for wide receiver targets, while Washington is in the bottom third of the league for this ranking.
We can fire up our Washington corners in only the deepest, darkest, and most degenerate leagues known to mankind in Week 14. The Minnesota passing attack, and offense in general, is dead on arrival. As for our Minnesota corners, we can start them in medium to deeper leagues this week.
Washington Commanders
Quan Martin (S/CB): SOLID. He played 95% of snaps last week as a deep safety and is incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo. He regained some playing time this week, which was good to see.
Will Harris (S/CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 78% of snaps as a starting safety and is incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo. He lined up in the box for more than half his snaps.
Mike Sainristil (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside corner. With Amos and Lattimore on IR, Sainristil has been moved to an outside cornerback role.
Jonathan Jones (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 98% of snaps as an outside corner last week and should remain a starter with both Lattimore and Amos on IR.
Noah Igbinoghene (CB): SIT. He only played 65% of snaps last week; he typically doesn’t play unless multiple players are injured, and this matchup stinks.
Minnesota Vikings
Josh Metellus (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 92% of snaps last week as a starting safety and is incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo. He lined up deep for the most part, but had a nice chunk of box/slot snaps as well.
Byron Murphy (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside corner with a decent chunk of bonus slot snaps.
Isaiah Rogers (CB): SOLID. He played 80% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Dolphins at Jets
Outlook: The early total for this AFC East showdown sits at 41.5 points with Miami favored by a field goal on the road. Miami is within the bottom third of the league for passing yards per game, while New York is dead last across the league for this ranking. Both teams are within the bottom third of the league for targeting their wide receivers each week.
It will be “deeper leagues only” for this one, but our New York corners are absolutely in a better setup than our Miami corners.
Miami Dolphins
Rasul Douglas (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Jack Jones (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
All others (CB): SIT. No other corner cleared 6% of snaps for Miami last week.
New York Jets
Brandon Stephens (CB): SOLID. He played 98% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Azareyeh Thomas (CB): SOLID. He played 98% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Jarvis Brownlee/All others (CB): SIT. Brownlee was inactive with a hip injury last week, but had apparently been displaced by Thomas prior to that anyway. And no other New York corner cleared 43% of snaps played.
Saints at Bucs
Outlook: The early total for this NFC South matchup sits at 43.5 points with Tampa Bay favored by a touchdown at home. Both teams are in the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. Both teams are within the top ten for wide receiver targets each week. This is an ideal matchup across the board on paper. The health of Baker, Olave, and others will determine if that’s the case in reality.
New Orleans Saints
Alontae Taylor (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps and lined up in the box, slot, or defensive line (blitzing attempt) for the vast majority of his snaps.
Koolaid McKinstry (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Quincy Riley (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 50% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tykee Smith (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 98% of snaps last week and lined up all over the place. He was under projection for the first time this season against Arizona, but has been as consistent and productive as we’d hope beyond that.
Zyon McCollum (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Jamel Dean/Benjamin Morrison (CB): SOLID. Dean played 95% of snaps as an outside corner last week. Morrison has been his replacement while he’s been injured in recent weeks.
Jacob Parrish (CB): SOLID. He played 77% of snaps from the slot last week.
Bengals at Bills
Outlook: The early total for this likely shootout sits at a massive 53.5 points with Buffalo favored by a touchdown at home. Both teams are either within the top ten for passing yards per game or just outside of it. Cincy has the second-most wide receiver targets (at the time of writing), while Buffalo is in the middle of the pack.
It’s an ideal setup for our Buffalo corners this week, but we’ll go with “medium to deeper leagues” for our Cincy corners, although Dax Hill should be in an ideal setup for sure.
Cincinnati Bengals
Dax Hill (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week, most of them from outside corner. He also had some slot and box snaps, but fewer of them than we’ve seen in other games this season. I’ll keep an eye on it; that’s an outlier for now.
DJ Turner (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
All others (CB): SIT. This last cornerback slot continues to be in flux as I read more new names that played here this past week. I’ll shout it out when this slot is trustworthy again, it isn’t at the moment, that’s for sure.
Buffalo Bills
Christian Benford (CB): SOLID. He played 93% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Taron Johnson (CB): IDEAL. He played just 58% of snaps from the slot last week, but as the link at the top of the article shows, that was expected against Pittsburgh. He should play a ton more this week, and his matchup is perfect.
Tre’Davious White (CB): SOLID. Risky. He played 76% of snaps as an outside corner last week; his playing time has been in flux since Hairston returned from IR.
Maxwell Hairston (CB): SIT. He only played about 30% of snaps last week.
Broncos at Raiders
Outlook: The early total for this AFC West matchup sits at 39.5 points with Denver favored by a touchdown at home. Both teams are in the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. Denver is just outside the top ten for wide receiver targets each week, while Las Vegas is the 4th-worst team in the league for this ranking.
We can fire up our Las Vegas corners in an ideal matchup; unfortunately for us, they aren’t very good or productive, but the matchup looks good on paper. For our Denver corners, it will be “deeper leagues only” for them in this particular setup.
Denver Broncos
Patrick Surtain (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Riley Moss (CB): SOLID. He played 85% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
JaQuan McMillian (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 71% of snaps as the slot corner last week.
Jahdae Barron (CB): SIT. He only played 27% of snaps last week.
Las Vegas Raiders
Eric Stokes (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Kyu Blu Kelly (CB): SOLID, much deeper leagues only. He played just 51% of snaps as an outside corner last week. He and Porter continue to split the other full-time corner back role down the middle.
Darien Porter (CB): SOLID, much deeper leagues only. He played just 49% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Bears at Packers
Outlook: The early total for this NFC North showdown sits at 46.5 points with Green Bay favored by a touchdown at home. Both teams are in the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. Chicago is a top-ten team for wide receiver targets, while Green Bay is now in the middle of the pack for this ranking.
We can fire up Keisean Nixon and our Green Bay options in an ideal matchup, but it will be “medium to deeper leagues” for our Chicago corners in Week 14.
Chicago Bears
Tyrique Stevenson (CB): SIT. He was inactive last week with a hip injury, and we don’t need to chase it (and the reinjury risk associated with chasing him) in this particular matchup.
Nahshon Wright (CB): SOLID. Wright played 100% of snaps as an outside corner despite the return of Johnson. He appears to have locked down a starting role regardless, so we’ll trust it for now.
Kyler Gordon (CB): SOLID. He played 66% of snaps last week, a mix of outside corner and slot snaps.
Jaylon Johnson (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 61% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Green Bay Packers
Keisean Nixon (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week. He’s only been under projection two or three times this entire season. We’ll ride the hot hand in a favorable matchup.
Carrington Valentine (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week. His playing time and utilization have been solid all season, but his production has not been. He should remain a “deeper leagues only” option going forward.
Javon Bullard (S/CB): SOLID. He played 68% of snaps from the slot last week.
Rams at Cardinals
Outlook: The early total for this NFC West matchup sits at 47.5 points with Los Angeles favored by a touchdown on the road. Los Angeles is a top ten team for passing yards per game, and Arizona is now just outside the top ten thanks to the month that Brissett has been having. Los Angeles is a top-five team for wide receiver targets, while Arizona is now in the middle of the pack (they were a bottom-third team before Brissett took over).
This is an ideal matchup for our Arizona corners, and we have a chance here for this to be an ideal matchup across the board if Brissett keeps going as he has been. We’ll call it “medium to deeper leagues” for our Los Angeles corners to be on the safe side, for now.
Los Angeles Rams
Emmanuel Forbes (CB): SOLID. He played 90% of snaps last week from outside corner and had a nice chunk of box snaps as well.
Cobie Durant (CB): SOLID. Deeper leagues only. He played 62% of snaps last week from the outside corner with a nice chunk of slot snaps.
Darious Williams (CB): SIT. He only played 43% of snaps last week and has not seen his playing time return to where we want to see it since coming back from an injury around Week 10.
Arizona Cardinals
Will Johnson (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.,
Garrett Williams (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week, with most of them coming from the slot or box.
Max Melton/Denzel Burke (CB): Melton was inactive last week. He would be a risky SOLID in deeper leagues if he can play this week (reinjury risk). Burke replaced him and played 62% of snaps as an outside corner. Burke is only an option if Melton is inactive again, SIT otherwise.
Texans at Chiefs
Outlook: The early total for the Sunday Night Football matchup for Week 14 sits at 42.5 points with Kansas City favored by 5.5 points at home. Kansas City is 2nd overall for passing yards per game, while Houston is in the middle of the pack. Both teams are now within the top ten for wide receiver targets per game after the excellent last few games from Davis Mills prior to Stroud’s return last week.
On paper, it’s an ideal matchup. In reality, it’s an ideal matchup for our Houston corners, and I would lean “medium to deeper leagues” for our Kansas City corners, especially if Stroud is under center.
Houston Texans
Jalen Pitre (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps from the box and slot last week and has a fantastic matchup this week.
Kamari Lassiter (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week. Most of those snaps were from outside, but he also had a nice chunk of box snaps.
Derek Stingley (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week. Most of those snaps were from outside, but he also had a nice chunk of box snaps.
Kansas City Chiefs
Trent McDuffie (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Jaylen Watson (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Chamarri Conner (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 95% of snaps last week, the majority of them coming from the slot or box.
Eagles at Chargers
Outlook: The early total for the Monday Night Football matchup to wrap up Week 14 sits at 43.5 points with Philly favored by a field goal on the road. Los Angeles is just outside the top ten for passing yards per game, while Philly is within the bottom third of the league for this ranking. Los Angeles has the most wide receiver targets in the league (at the time of writing), while Philly is within the bottom third of the league for this ranking.
This is an absolutely ideal matchup for Cooper DeJean and our Philly options, but it will be “deeper leagues only” for our Los Angeles corners in Week 14. Demote our Philly options accordingly if Herbert can’t play this week.
Philadelphia Eagles
Quinyon Mitchell (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Cooper DeJean (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps and lined up all over the place last week. He’s been under projection in just 2 or 3 games this season, depending on your scoring system.
Adoree Jackson (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, very risky. Jackson played 60% of snaps as an outside corner last week and has been the starter for this slot in 3 of the last 4 games. This slot has been in flux for most of the season, but if you need a Hail Mary in deeper leagues, this might be it.
Los Angeles Chargers
Elijah Molden (S/CB): SOLID. He played 95% of snaps as a deep safety last week and is incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo.
Tarheeb Still (CB): SOLID, risky. He played 77% of snaps from outside corner and the slot last week after seemingly losing his starting role the week prior. This is anything but safe; buyer beware.
Cam Hart (CB): SIT. He played just 56% of snaps as an outside corner last week, which won’t cut it in this matchup.
Donte Jackson (CB): SIT. He played just 52% of snaps as an outside corner last week, which won’t cut it in this matchup.
Benjamin St Juste (CB): SIT. He only played 35% of snaps last week.
Byes this week: Carolina, New England, San Francisco, New York Giants
My Favorite Matchups, Week 14:
Cowboys vs Lions, either side
Colts corners vs Jaguars
Saints vs Bucs, either side
Bills corners vs Bengals
Packers corners vs Bears
Cardinals corners vs Rams
Texans corners vs Chiefs
Eagles corners vs Chargers
