Johny The Greek's Cornerback Corner: Week 12
What are the best CB options for IDP fantasy football leagues in Week 12?
Welcome back to the Cornerback Corner! As is tradition, we’ll start with transparency and get right into this week’s calls.
Last week, I made 85 calls for leagues of all shapes and sizes. Of those 85 calls, 8 were declared inactive or were injured during play, which caused them to miss their projection (early in the game). Subtracting those players, we’re left with 77 “adjusted” calls.
Of those, 58 were correct (matched, beat, or were within a slim margin of their projection on Yahoo and MFL), and 19 were incorrect (didn’t match or beat projection and weren’t even close), giving us 75% accuracy for Week 11.
Of those 58 correct calls, 25 were “massive hits” (doubled, tripled, or more, their projection), giving us a 43% massive hit rate on correct calls for Week 11.
We are 72% accurate overall for the season, with 37% of all correct calls ending up as “massive hits.”
Week 1: 72% accuracy, 41% massive hit rate
Week 2: 73% accuracy, 46% massive hit rate
Week 3: 65% accuracy, 45% massive hit rate
Week 4: 73% accuracy, 36% massive hit rate
Week 5: 75% accuracy, 32% massive hit rate
Week 6: 67% accuracy, 34% massive hit rate
Week 7: 75% accuracy, 38% massive hit rate
Week 8: 75% accuracy, 30% massive hit rate
Week 9: 76% accuracy, 32% massive hit rate
Week 10: 72% accuracy, 36% massive hit rate
Week 11: 75% accuracy, 43% massive hit rate
Please see THIS if you need a primer in cornerback streaming or what’s being discussed in this article (for new readers).
If you notice a player playing safety who is designated a corner in your league of merit, please feel free to comment below, and I’ll update the article with that information.
Alignment & utilization metrics are sourced from PFF.com, an outstanding resource for all things fantasy football-related.
To this point in the season, these teams use 11 personnel (3 WR sets) the least week-to-week (go from the bottom up on this list). Your opposing slot corners (Sainristil, Phillips, etc) will likely see a significant reduction in playing time against these teams. Thank you to sumersports.com for the information.
Bills at Texans
Outlook: The early total for the Thursday night game to kick off Week 12 sits at 45 points with Buffalo favored by a field goal on the road. Both teams are among the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. Houston is a top-ten team for wide receiver targets (at the time of writing), while Buffalo is in the middle of the pack for this ranking.
We can fire up our Buffalo corners in a pretty good matchup, better than “medium to deeper” leagues, but also not quite ideal. As for our Houston corners, medium to deeper leagues make sense for them, as Buffalo still prefers to run and target their tight ends over any wide receiver targets week to week. We haven’t seen a ton of difference between Stroud or Mills for wide receiver targets, so we should be alright for our Buffalo corners with whichever quarterback starts this week.
Buffalo Bills
Christian Benford (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Taron Johnson (CB): SOLID. He played 73% of snaps last week from the slot.
Maxwell Hairston/Tre’Davious White (CB): SIT them both. They were back to splitting this final cornerback slot right down the middle (52% to 48% of snaps, respectively) like we saw a few weeks ago. Hairston hasn’t fully locked down a full-time role as of yet, it appears (unless this was blowout rest, which is a possibility). If you need to play one of these two, Hairston is the better bet for more playing time.
Houston Texans
Derek Stingley (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Kamari Lassiter (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Jalen Pitre/Myles Bryant (S/CB): IDEAL, if healthy. Pitre has excellent playing time and utilization, which is well-established. If he’s inactive again, then Bryant becomes a SOLID option (SIT otherwise). Bryant played 100% of snaps as the Pitre replacement last week and had a ton of slot/box snaps.
Colts at Chiefs
Outlook: The early total for this possible shootout sits at 50.5 points with Kansas City favored by 4.5 points at home. This is the number 4 and 5 overall passing offenses for yards per game, respectively. Both teams are either within the top ten for wide receiver targets each week or just outside of it. On paper, we have an ideal matchup, and according to Vegas, it’s likely to be a shootout. We can fire up all the usual suspects in one of the best matchups available for Week 12.
Indianapolis Colts
Kenny Moore (CB): IDEAL. He played 85% of snaps the last time we saw him (bye last week), with most of his snaps coming from the slot or box.
Sauce Gardner (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside cornerback in Week 10.
Mekhi Blackmon (CB): SOLID. He played 98% of snaps as an outside cornerback in Week 10.
Kansas City Chiefs
Trent McDuffie (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback with a nice chunk of box/slot snaps as added value.
Jaylen Watson (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Chamarri Conner (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week and lined up in the box and slot for the majority of those snaps.
Vikings at Packers
Outlook: The early total for this NFC North showdown sits at 43.5 points with Green Bay favored by a touchdown at home. Green Bay is just outside the top ten for passing yards per game, while Minnesota is within the worst third of the league for this ranking. Minnesota is within the top third of the league for wide receiver targets each week, while Green Bay is within the bottom third of the league for this ranking.
This is a “deeper leagues only” matchup across the board. Green Bay barely targets its wide receivers, and while Minnesota has a decent ranking for this, JJ McCarthy is only completing 14 passes per game, so that’s a bit of smoke and mirrors. That ranking is still being floated by the acceptable stats we were getting from Carson Wentz earlier this season.
Minnesota Vikings
Isaiah Rogers (CB): SOLID. He played 81% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Byron Murphy (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Josh Metellus (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week as a safety that’s incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo. He had plenty of box and slot snaps, which is what we’re always looking for.
Green Bay Packers
Carrington Valentine (CB): SOLID. He played 97% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Keisean Nixon (CB): SOLID. He played 97% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Javon Bullard (S/CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played just 65% of snaps last week, but those snaps were from the slot, which helps offset some of that bad playing time.
Patriots at Bengals
Outlook: The early total for this one sits at a massive 51 points with New England favored by 5.5 points on the road. Both of these passing attacks are either within the top ten for passing yards per game or just outside of it. New England is within the middle of the pack for wide receiver targets each week, while Cincy is a top-five team for this ranking.
We’ve got an ideal setup for Marcus Jones and our New England corners this week, but it will be “medium to deeper leagues” for Dax Hill and our Cincy options in this particular setup. This setup may not be as good as I initially thought if Chase ends up suspended for one game (this game) for hawking up a loogie on Jalen Ramsey last week, demote our New England corners slightly if that does end up being the case. Update: That’s exactly what’s happening unless his appeal is upheld. We’ll demote our New England options a bit, as the ten-plus wide receiver targets that Chase gets each week will be missing as he serves his suspension for this game.
New England Patriots
Carlton Davis (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Christian Gonzalez (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Marcus Jones (CB): IDEAL. He played just 66% of snaps as the slot corner this week, but should play more against Cincy and is in a great position for production this week with his excellent utilization.
Cincinnati Bengals
Dax Hill (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week; most of those snaps came from the box or slot.
DJ Turner (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Cam Taylor Britt/All others (CB): SIT. As predicted, Britt only played 15% of snaps last week; he remains a dangerous option. And no other corner crossed 10% of snaps played.
Giants at Lions
Outlook: The early total for this battle in the Motor City sits at 49.5 points with Detroit favored by 11 points at home. Detroit is a top-ten passing attack, while New York is within the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. Both teams are among the middle of the pack for wide receiver targets each week.
We can fire up our New York corners in medium to deeper leagues, but it will depend on who is under center for the Giants to give us our setup for our Detroit corners. If it’s Jameis Winston, then we can fire up everyone. Danger-Russ or Dart, then we need to back that off to “medium to deeper leagues”.
New York Giants
Paulson Adebo/Deonte Banks (CB): SOLID, if healthy. Adebo almost played last week but reinjured himself during warmups. Banks replaced him once more and played 70% of snaps as an outside corner. If Adebo is inactive again, then Banks is a SOLID option for deeper leagues, SIT otherwise.
Cor’Dale Flott (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Andru Phillips (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played just 47% of snaps last week as the slot corner. Use the link and information at the top of this article to help determine if your slot corner is going up against a team that doesn’t use enough 11 personnel to give our slot corner the playing time he needs to produce.
Detroit Lions
DJ Reed (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, if healthy. He is returning from IR any week now and is a full-time outside cornerback when healthy.
Terrion Arnold (CB): SOLID, if healthy. He missed last week with a concussion but should clear protocol in time to play this week as a full-time outside cornerback.
Amik Robertson (CB): SOLID if either Reed or Arnold is inactive, SIT if both play. He is the primary replacement/backup cornerback for Detroit. He played 100% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
All others (CB): SIT them all. It’s a gigantic mess beyond Amik Robertson as a preferred replacement corner with no other backup corner crossing 25% of snaps played last week.
Jets at Ravens
Outlook: The early total for this one sits at 44.5 points with Baltimore favored by 14.5 points at home. Both teams are within the bottom third of the league for passing yards per game. These teams are 31st and 30th overall, respectively, for wide receiver targets each week. It will be “deeper leagues only” across the board for this one.
New York Jets
Brandon Stephens (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Jarvis Brownlee (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 90% of snaps last week as the slot corner, but has also played outside this season. He should have some kind of role.
Azareyeh Thomas (CB): SIT. He was inactive with a concussion last week, but should have some kind of role here when healthy. We just don’t know what that will look like yet, with all the injuries and fluctuations after the Sauce Gardner departure.
Baltimore Ravens
Nate Wiggins (CB): SOLID, he played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Marlon Humphrey/Chidobe Awuzie (CB): Humphrey would be a SIT due to the matchup and reinjury concerns if he could play this week. Awuzie will see a bump in playing time if Humphrey is inactive, just like last week, where he played 94% of snaps as an outside corner. SIT Awuzie, if Humphrey is active, his playing time typically drops off a cliff when Wiggins and Humphrey are active.
All others (CB): SIT. No other corner crossed 32% of snaps played last week.
Steelers at Bears
Outlook: The early total for this showdown in the Windy City sits at 46.5 points with Chicago favored by 1.5 points at home. Chicago is just outside the top ten for passing yards per game, while Pittsburgh is within the middle of the pack. Chicago is just outside the top ten for wide receiver targets each week, while Pittsburgh is dead last across the entire league for this ranking.
We’ve got an ideal setup for Joey Porter Jr, Jalen Ramsey, and our Pittsburgh corners in Week 12. But it will be “deeper leagues only” for Tyrique Stevenson and our Chicago options this week against a Steelers team that really only targets Metcalf on a week-to-week basis.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Jalen Ramsey (S/CB): SOLID, borderline IDEAL. He was on his way to a nice game last week, but got himself ejected for punching Jamar Chase after Chase spat on him. He is a full-time safety who is incorrectly designated as a cornerback in Yahoo.
Joey Porter Jr (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Darius Slay/James Pierre (CB): Slay was inactive last week, and Pierre replaced him to the tune of 98% of snaps at outside corner. Slay would be SOLID if he can play, Pierre would be SOLID as his replacement if he’s inactive again. SIT Pierre if Slay is healthy. This is a full-time outside cornerback slot.
Brandin Echols (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played just 74% of snaps last week, but they were from the slot, which helps offset some of that bad playing time.
Chicago Bears
Tyrique Stevenson (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 72% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Jaylon Johnson/Nahshon Wright (CB): Johnson is still designated to return from IR any week now. Whenever that happens, he should return to the full-time starter for this outside corner slot. Wright replaced him again last week and played 100% of snaps. I would SIT Johnson in his first game back in over two months. We can start Wright as a SOLID option in deeper leagues if Johnson is inactive again (SIT otherwise).
Chauncey Gardner Johnson (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week from the box or slot and is the new slot corner in Chicago. Unfortunately for us, he’s designated as a safety in most places.
Seahawks at Titans
Outlook: The early total for this matchup in the Music City sits at 43.5 points with Seattle favored by 12.5 points on the road. Seattle is a top ten passing attack, while Tennessee is now the second-worst team in the league for passing yards per game. Tennessee is within the middle of the pack for passing yards per game, while Seattle is within the bottom third of the league for this ranking.
It will be “deeper leagues only” across the board for this one. Seattle doesn’t need to complete a ton of passes each week to win, and Tennessee may attempt enough wide receiver targets, but many of those passes aren’t actually catchable.
Seattle Seahawks
Devon Witherspoon (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 90% of snaps last week as an outside corner with a nice chunk of box/slot snaps as added value.
Nick Emmanwori (S/CB): SOLID. He played 94% of snaps last week, most of them from the box or slot. This would be IDEAL in a better matchup.
Josh Jobe (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 60% of snaps last week as an outside corner after missing a couple of games due to injury. They were likely easing him back into the lineup.
Tariq Woolen (CB): SIT, he should be seeing a reduction in snaps now that Jobe is healthy again and regaining his starting slot.
Tennessee Titans
Darrel Baker Jr (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Marcus Harris (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 71% of snaps as the slot corner last week.
Jaylyn Armor Davis/Samuel Womack (CB): SIT. Davis lost some snaps to Womack last week, and it appears these two are splitting this last cornerback slot at the moment. We’ll wait and see what happens here before playing either of them.
Browns at Raiders
Outlook: We’ve got a likely defensive struggle with just 37.5 points for the early total here, with Las Vegas favored by 1.5 points at home. Both teams are within the bottom third of the league for passing yards per game. And both teams are also within the bottom third of the league for wide receiver targets each week. This one will be “deeper leagues only” across the board, and I doubt I’ll personally have anyone going from this matchup.
Cleveland Browns
Denzel Ward (CB): SOLID. He played 98% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Tyson Campbell (CB): SOLID. He played 90% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Myles Harden (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played just 45% of snaps as the slot corner last week. His playing time will fluctuate depending on how much 11 personnel the opposing team plays. See the link at the top of the article to help navigate this issue.
Las Vegas Raiders
Eric Stokes (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Kyu Blu Kelly (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only, risky. He played 70% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Darien Porter (CB): SIT. He only played 23% of snaps last week.
Jaguars at Cardinals
Outlook: The early total for this battle in sunny Arizona sits at 45.5 points with the Cardinals favored by 1.5 points at home. Both teams are among the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. Jacksonville has the second-most wide receiver targets each week (at the time of writing), while Arizona is the 4th-worst team in the league for this ranking.
We’ve got an ideal setup for our Arizona corners in Week 12, but it will be “deeper leagues only” for our Jacksonville corners in this setup.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jourdan Lewis/Jarrian Jones (CB): Lewis was inactive again last week. He would be a risky (reinjury) SOLID if he could play this week as a full-time slot corner with great utilization. Jones replaced him once again and played 95% of snaps as a slot corner. He would be a SOLID option if Lewis is inactive again, SIT otherwise.
Montaric Brown (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Greg Newsome/Christian Braswell (CB): Newsome exited early with an ankle injury last week. He would be a risky SOLID if he could play this week. Braswell replaced him, but we’ve only seen that once, so we trust it zero percent (SIT Braswell).
Arizona Cardinals
Max Melton (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Will Johnson/Denzel Burke (CB): Johnson was inactive last week with a back injury. He would be a risky SOLID if he could play this week. Burke replaced him and played 89% of snaps as an outside cornerback. He would also be a risky SOLID if Johnson is inactive again this week (SIT otherwise).
Garrett Williams (CB): SOLID. He played 52% of snaps last week, but all of those snaps came from the slot or box, and Arizona got annihilated immediately, so we probably got some blowout rest for Williams. He should play more in a closer game.
Falcons at Saints
Outlook: The early total for this NFC South showdown sits at 41.5 points with Atlanta favored by a field goal on the road. Both teams are among the middle of the pack for passing yards per game. New Orleans has the third most wide receiver targets each week (at the time of writing), while Atlanta is among the middle of the pack for this ranking.
We can fire up everyone in medium to deeper leagues; it’s definitely a better setup for our Atlanta corners with that opposing New Orleans wide receiver targets ranking, but with an inexperienced quarterback under center, it could just as easily turn into a blood bath and early rest for everyone. And our New Orleans corners should have as much “to eat” with Cousins under center as they did with Penix under center, if not more.
Atlanta Falcons
AJ Terrell (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Mike Hughes/Dee Alford/Natrone Brooks (CB): Hughes would be a risky SOLID if he could play this week; he’s been injured and out for the last two games. Brooks replaced him last week, but that only happened due to Dee Alford also being inactive. When we get this far into the “inception levels” of backup corners, we usually stop chasing. It’s too easy to guess wrong and eat a zero (SIT Brooks). Dee Alford would be the first option as a replacement corner if Hughes is inactive again this week, and he would be SOLID in that scenario. This is a full-time outside cornerback slot.
Billy Bowman (S/CB): SOLID. He played 80% of snaps last week from the slot and box.
New Orleans Saints
Alontae Taylor (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps with most of them coming from the slot, box, or were a blitzing attempt, the last time we saw him (bye last week).
Koolaid McKinstry (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside cornerback the last time we saw him.
Quincy Riley (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 73% of snaps as an outside corner the last time we saw him.
Eagles at Cowboys
Outlook: The early total for this battle in Jerry-world sits at a massive 50.5 points with Philly favored by a field goal on the road. Dallas is the third-best team in the league for passing yards per game, while Philly is within the bottom third of the league for this ranking. Dallas has a top-ten ranking for wide receiver targets, while Philly is, once again, within the bottom third of the league.
We’ve got an ideal matchup for Cooper DeJean and our Philly options, but it will be “deeper leagues only” for DaRon Bland and our Dallas options in Week 12.
Philadelphia Eagles
Cooper DeJean (CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps last week, lined up all over the place, and smashed his projection once again. He remains the best IDP cornerback option we have this season, hands down.
Quinyon Mitchell (CB): SOLID. He played 98% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
All others (CB): SIT. It was Adoree Jackson again last week as the third corner here in Philly. If you’re truly desperate, then that’s probably the option. However, we’ve seen Kelee Ringo, Jakorian Bennett, and others here as Philly has not been able to lock down this last cornerback slot all season. I trust this zero percent.
Dallas Cowboys
DaRon Bland (CB): IDEAL. He played 95% of snaps last week, with a huge chunk of them from the slot or box. He has been over his projection in every single game since Week 7.
Kair Elam (CB): SIT. He was benched for Caelen Carson last week. The Dallas coaching staff neglected to inform me of this, so apologies to anyone who started him last week.
Caelen Carson (CB): SIT. While he did play 100% of snaps out of nowhere last week, this other starting cornerback slot in Dallas has been in flux for months now. I don’t trust this at all. We need to see it another time or two before considering it.
All others (CB): SIT. No other corner cleared 36% of snaps played last week.
Bucs at Rams
Outlook: The early total for this possible playoff preview sits at 49.5 points with Los Angeles favored by a touchdown at home. Los Angeles is the second-best team in the league for passing yards per game, while Tampa Bay is just outside the top ten for this ranking. Both teams are within the top ten for wide receiver targets each week.
We can fire up everyone with a pulse for this one, as on paper, and probably in reality as well, this is an ideal matchup across the board.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tykee Smith (S/CB): IDEAL. He played 100% of snaps and lined up all over the place. He continues to be an outstanding option for IDP leagues, whether you use him at safety or corner.
Zyon McCollum (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps last week as an outside cornerback.
Jamel Dean/Benjamin Morrison (CB): SOLID, if healthy. Dean exited early last week with a hip injury and would be a risky (reinjury) start if he can go this week. Morrison replaced him and played 96% of snaps last week. He would be SOLID if Dean is inactive, SIT otherwise. This is an outside cornerback slot.
Jacob Parrish (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played just 60% of snaps last week, but they were from the slot, which helps offset some of that bad playing time.
Los Angeles Rams
Emmanuel Forbes (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 76% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Darious Williams (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 67% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Cobie Durant (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 67% of snaps as an outside cornerback last week.
Quentin Lake (S/CB): SIT. He will “miss some time” with the elbow injury he sustained last week. His backup was unclear, and a few players combined to cover his absence. Cobie Durant did see a slight bump in slot snaps after his exit, which could be nice for his value if that holds.
Panthers at 49ers
Outlook: The early total for the Monday Night Football game to round out Week 12 sits at 46 points with San Francisco favored by a touchdown at home. San Francisco averages the most passing yards per game (at the time of writing), while Carolina is now the third-worst in the league for this ranking. Both teams are in the middle of the pack for wide receiver targets each week.
We can fire up the usual suspects in medium to deeper leagues, and that should be about right for this one.
Carolina Panthers
Jaycee Horn (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Mike Jackson (CB): SOLID. He played 100% of snaps as an outside corner last week.
Chau Smith Wade/Corey Thornton (CB): SIT them both. Wade saw a massive reduction in snaps down to just 22% last week, while Thornton came out of nowhere to play 69% of snaps, nice, as the slot corner. This slot is in flux. We’ll sit everyone down until it works itself out.
San Francisco 49ers
Deommodore Lenoir (CB): SOLID. He played 83% of snaps as an outside corner last week, then sat early due to the blowout.
Renardo Green (CB): SOLID. He played 89% of snaps as an outside corner last week, then sat early due to the blowout.
Upton Stout (CB): SOLID, deeper leagues only. He played 51% of snaps as the slot corner last week.
Byes this week: Denver Broncos, L.A. Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Washington Commanders
